Welcome to Pro/Con, a new regular feature where we list the relative merits and shortcomings of a dubious trend to see how it holds up under intense scrutiny. Magazines and Designers might lead you astray, but the Pro/Con column never lies.

This week: Overalls

Last week was denim week, and in honor of the ultimate American fabric we’re contemplating denim’s least revered format: the humble overall. Yes, somewhere your mother is sniggering. The 90’s revival must be raging strong, because overalls were embraced by trendsetting designers such as Rag & Bone, DKNY, and Alexander Wang. Rag & Bone is THE fashionista denim purveyor so when they do denim anything, you’d be wise to take notice. Spring 2014’s overall is a cleaner, minimalist revival of the grungy 90’s after school special staple that is the denim overall. Think sporty, not slacker.

Stylish celebs like Alessandra Ambrosio, Julianne Hough, Elizabeth Moss, Brie Larson, Megan Good, Lindsay Lohan, and Diane Kruger have been recently spotted sporting denim overalls.  Shopbop Fashion Director Elle Strauss rhapsodies over awesome overalls. “Overalls are a wardrobe essential for me.”

She makes a good point, and the pictures of models in overalls are super cute. But what about actual women? Let’s pro/con it.

Pro: Overalls pair perfectly with the ubiquitous crop top to show rare glimpse of side ab.

VERDICT: I’m PRO-Overall UNLESS you are a particularly petite, youthful looking woman.  In that case, sit this trend out. At least you’ll age well!
