Doe-eyed Nordic waif Esmeralda Seay Reynolds skipped her way down the F/W 2014 Runways and into my heart. A Marc Jacobs girl to the core, Esmeralda recently scored the coveted spot as Miley Cyrus’s sidekick in the new Marc Jacobs Campaign. The gamine stunner strutted F/W 2014 Runways for Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, Moschino, Fendi, Anna Sui, Giles, Vionnet, Fausto Puglisi, Maison Martin Margiela, and Creatures of The Wind. So what now? One word: Editorial. Advertising and Runway are a fabulous start, but any model worth her size 24 jeans know the real credit comes from appearing in Magazine Editorial spreads. Esmeralda is already poised to make a strong start, with upcoming appearances in hipster publications like Garage, i-D, Fat, and LOVE. All before her 17th birthday.
Esmeralda Seay Reynolds – full name Esmeralda Tatiana Athena Sahar Seay-Reynolds – might look like an angel, but she sounds like just another gothic-inclined teenage girl. In a recent interview with i-D magazine, Mac Jacob’s latest muse quipped “My parents say Pennsylvania, most other people say Transylvania, but I say where I really came from is Tim Burton’s sketchbook.” Even in her early teens, Esmeralda knew that she wanted to become a model. “I knew that I wanted this, and so I went banging on doors and emailing photos for almost a year non-stop until I found the one that would take me, I was a girl on a mission!”
After signing with Next Models NY and walking her very first show on the Marc Jacobs runway, Esmeralda lived today’s teen dream by modeling alongside Miley Cyrus for her fashion fairy godmother Marc Jacobs’ latest campaign. It turned out to be a bonding moment for the young super-starlets. Esmeralda spilled the details to i-D:
“Actually had no idea prior to the shoot that Miley would be there, nor did I know as much about her as most others to be honest, since I never had cable growing up. Most of what I knew was what I heard people say on the radio, like “she did something at something called the VMA’s and she sings well,” was my basic idea of he. But then, as I was in the studio, doing my math homework – bam! – Miley Cyrus walks up, somehow making a Chanel shirt work as a crop top with a pair of overalls, and was just like, “hey, what’s up, I’m Miley,” and I was just like, “say what?” She turned out to be one of the nicest and also most intelligent people I’ve worked with and I now absolutely “ado-o-o-ore” her music!”
Esmeralda also discussed a less-than-Orthodox Runway mindset:
“I think the most random things when I’m walking the runway in order to try and distract myself, like “what color would I paint a cow if I could?… hmmm… maybe pink or possibly rainbow?” If I actually thought about where I was and the fact that my childhood idols are sitting five feet away watching me, I think I’d start to cry and then my make-up would run and we can’t have that, so rainbow cows it is!”
Like many young models, Esmeralda hopes to eventually make the leap from fashion into acting. Hopefully we’ll be seeing her in Tim Burton’s next fabulous flick!
