Trend That Needs To End: Exposed Zipper

Nothing ruins the experience of shopping for me more than finding an amazing dress, only to turn it over and discover…an exposed zipper.  Exposed zippers have been going strong for about 6 or 7 years and I’m sure they were edgy and cool when they first appeared around 2006- but haven’t they had enough time in the spotlight?

Exposed Zipper in Teen Vogue 2007…where it should stay.

To me, the exposed zip is a time stamp (much like the mini-skort!), and one that doesn’t even look high-end.  When I think of exposed zippers, fast fashion comes to mind: I’ve seen endless interpretations at Forever 21 and H&M.  It’s obvious why cheap retailers have embraced this trend whole-heartedly:  because it’s cheap!

Over it!

Constructing an invisible zipper takes more care and, subsequently, more money than slapping on an exposed zipper.  Now, I’m all for affordable fashion; but when affordable fashion actually looks cheap, it’s missing the point.  I can see why this trend saw so much success during the recession, but I think its moment in the sun is done.

What do you guys think?  I am being too hard on the exposed zipper?
