Ticket To Ride

There are certain fashion formulas that will always work: jeans and white button down, a little black dress, leather pants and concert tee.  While prescribing to these tried-and-true combinations is totally OK and encouraged, sometimes a girl needs to mix things up!  That’s why I threw this look together- to prove to myself that a little experimentation can go a long way.

If you remember my Breaking The Rules series a few weeks back, you’ll know that I love mixing things up.  There’s a long-standing rule that says you shouldn’t wear black and brown together, but I’ve never been one for following the rules.  When the weather was a little too chilly to wear these brown leather Costume Nationale short-shorts on their own, I thought it’d be fun to layer them over opaque black tights!

After a massive Topshop shopping spree, I was dying to wear this glittery paillette sweater.  The off-white base and color-changing paillettes were a fun, unexpected match to my neutral bottom half; and the sweater’s subtle sparkle was a nice contrast to the toughness of my leather shorts.

I needed a pop of color, so I turned to my new Barney’s New York booties.  The teal color is surprisingly versatile:  they work with this mix of neutrals, but they also look amazing paired with yellow, cobalt blue, and black!

My favorite Swoon Luxe backpack was the finishing touch.  I love how this piece plays with the idea of a backpack: traditionally something used exclusively by schoolchildren, Swoon Luxe gives the backpack a totally grown-up makeover with luxurious leathers and skins.  I can’t get enough!

I hope this outfit inspires you to think outside of the box!
