Suit Yourself

I am loving the new Saint Laurent collection.  Designer Hedi Slimane went with a glam ‘80s rock vibe for his latest runway show- think broad shoulders, shiny fabrics, short party dresses, and loud prints galore.  My favorite looks from the Saint Laurent runway, though, were the suited-up separates.  Exaggerated shoulders, big lapels, slim trousers, and skinny ties are trending for SS14, and I can’t wait to get in on the action.  The best part about Slimane’s suited styles?  There are so many options!  From trousers to miniskirts to bowties and leather, there’s a suit in this collection for everyone.  Here are my faves:

The first suit that Saint Laurent sent down the runway was a pretty classic interpretation.  A lightly checkered gray fabric was cut in an updated 80s silhouette:  a long, broad-shouldered blazer paired with high-waisted slim trousers.  A traditional white button down was layered underneath and a simple black skinny tie was the finishing touch.  Pointy flats made the look feminine!

Slimane showed us that you don’t have to wear a traditional suit to get suited up- mix and match textures and pieces for a unique spin on the classic look.  Leather pants and a plain white tee got the corporate treatment from an oversized houndstooth blazer with leather lapels, while frilly socks and patent heels provided a girly touch.

Later on we saw a leather jacket take the place of a blazer when paired with skinny black pants and a ruffled button down.  It just goes to show that suits aren’t only for the office!

Take a skirt suit to new heights by ditching your pencil for a mini, says Slimane.  Whether you stick with all-black or go for a bold embellished look, you’ll be on-trend if you sport the look with black booties and a skinny tie.  Suits just got a little sexier!

The ultimate mix of masculine-feminine happens when you sport a sheer shirt under your menswear suit.  At Saint Laurent models strutted down the catwalk with their chests on display.  While this definitely isn’t a look appropriate for the streets, try wearing a lacey bandeau bra underneath a sheer button down IRL- all of Slimane’s sex appeal with none of the nudity!

If you can stand the heat, go for an all-leather version!  If not, try a leather mini with an oversized silk blazer.  Perfection!

Classic with a twist- can’t go wrong with that.

The first suit look on my list involves leather pants and a printed blazer- what about you?
