Overall Effect

I love overalls, but they’re not inherently “cool”.  If they’re not styled properly, overalls can look frumpy and old-fashioned– especially denim versions.  My trick to edging up overalls? Add leather!

When I found these leather overalls at Topshop, I had to have them.  Leather adds a luxurious element to a piece that rose to fame as a farmhand uniform, and gives these overalls a rock-and-roll vibe.  Silver zipper detailing makes them even more hardcore!

Since overalls are made to cover up the body, it’s important to make sure that they aren’t masking your figure.  To ensure my shape wasn’t lost in layers of leather, I skipped a top and wore a lacy black bra instead.   This gave the look a feminine flare, and a flash of midriff ensures that my figure is still flattered, despite being buried under overalls.

This black-on-black look was pretty simple, so I added some intrigue via accessories.  Peep-toe Martin Margiela booties showed off my pedicure, and my fave Pierre Hardy bag added a much-needed pop of color- I love how dramatic it looks against all-black!

The finishing touch was a 70s-esque Rag & Bone hat.  Thanks to movies like American Hustle and the major 1970s influences on the Spring runways, get ready to see floppy felt hats like this pop up everywhere.  It’s such an easy way to inject a modern outfit with some 70s nostalgia.

See?  Leather makes everything cool- even overalls ;)
