I try out a lot of different looks, but almost nothing (besides leather) beats out the classic-cool vibe of red, white, and blue- especially when “blue” is denim. The colors feel fresh and clean together, and if worn the right way, they don’t have to look over-the-top patriotic! I first wore this outfit during New York Fashion Week, but I’ve been coming back to it again and again lately.
When I found this vintage American Flag vest, I had to have it. It feels very 70s-rock-and-roll to me, like Bruce Springsteen would wear it or something. Putting together an outfit around it was challenging though, since I didn’t want to overload on the Americana vibe. My method? Mix in a healthy dose of neutrals!
I started with a plain black tee, since adding black to a red, white, and blue look instantly toughens up the happy-go-lucky color combo. After that I added my favorite vintage Levi’s (a must-have in every wardrobe), which I like because they’re a few shades darker than my vest. That tonal contrast makes all the difference- no Texas Tuxedo here.
Red Giuseppe Zanotti sandals and a red, white, and brown Celine bag added some oomph to the mix, but I still felt like something was missing. To add a super-trendy element to the look, I decided to tie a plaid top from Boy by Band Of Outsiders around my waist! I LOVE this 90s comeback trend and want to incorporate it into my looks as much as possible before it gets old.
This outfit was super-comfortable, too, which is a top priority for the craziness of NYFW. The best part about it, though, is that I can recreate the look with different pieces over and over again: next time, I’ll wear my vintage Levi’s with a rock tee and leather vest, or maybe try this vintage vest with leather shorts and a crop top. I’ll be sure to share whatever I come up with next!
