Iconography: Joan Didion

Didion And Corvette

In an original and highly applauded move, Céline recently unveiled an ad campaign starring Joan Didion, arguably the most celebrated female writer of our time. Joan Didion is the original manic pixie dream girl, an immortal intellectual icon with panache oozing from every invisible pore.

Céline designer Phoebe Philo has long since perfected the achingly austere aesthetic of unattainable cool and simple sensuality. Yet by using an (let’s come out and state the obvious) ELDERLY writer as the model of her luxury fashion label’s latest campaign, Phoebe Philo has truly banked on the benefits of a bold, unprecedented, defiantly untraditional move.

And it paid off. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is talking about Céline. Academics, artists, college students, anyone with an opinion and a laptop is gushing over Joan Didion: model.

For the last 5 years at least, Céline has solidified its status as THE trend setting high end label. Céline has the street cred of a new Designer darling, the respectability of venerable fashion houses, a continuously cohesive aesthetic, and strong sales from Season to Season. I suspect that rival Designers are currently scrambling to snatch up their own intellectual icon for next year’s campaign. Unfortunately for them, Didion is one of a kind.
