The Oscars are one of the most important fashion events of the year, as A-listers dress their best for one of Hollywood’s longest standing traditions that incorporates celebrities, recognition, and fashion of course. With a wide variety of Haute Couture gowns, clutches, and jewelry, the Oscars always exude the most glamorous dresses straight off the fashion runways. I love seeing where celebrities’ inspiration comes from and how they take a look from the runway and make it their own. Stars shimmered in silver and white and wore anything-but-basic black this year. While a few of my favorite celebrities opted for custom-made gowns, most were hand-selected from the spring and fall 2013 runways. Jennifer Lawrence was one of my favorites of the evening, in a Dior Haute Couture gown from the spring 2013 runway. In addition to dazzling Chopard drop earrings and a simple Roger Vivier clutch, she sported a delicate strand of diamond beads also by Chopard on backwards, and I think she made the dress her own and added her personality to the look. For her first Oscar red carpet appearance in four years, Jennifer Aniston wore a tangerine Valentino gown from the designer’s spring 2013 Couture runway. The strapless bodice and full skirt was a departure for Jennifer, who often favors more body-conscious looks and sticks to black (nothing wrong with that!) but it’s nice to see her add some color for spring. Miranda Kerr looked stunning in this fall 2012 (a very surprising choice) Valentino Couture gown as she went for an old Hollywood look with soft curls and bold, red lipstick. She looks classic and beautiful, and I love how she took this runway couture gown from last year and added her own “wow” factor that made her stand out. Runway to red carpet can either be a hit or miss and Stacy Kiebler was a knockout in this black beaded dress by Naeem Khan fall 2013. Stacy kept it classy on the red carpet and looked glamorous alongside George Clooney, and I applaud her for taking this beautiful gown to another level— removing the neck bow and see through top made it truly stunning. And on the contrary, just because a dress is beautiful on the runway does not mean that it will be glamorous on the red carpet. The gorgeous magenta ball gown that graced the Marchesa Fall 2013 runway turned out to photograph on Fan Bingbing as more of a dulled, bright pink, and it seemed to have lost a bit of its couture as it appeared as more of a princess gown at the Oscars. Paired along with her pink bracelet, black sparkly clutch, and matching pink lipstick, the gown seems to have lost its wow factor that it had from the Marchesa runway.
