Don’t Call It a Comeback

A person probably can’t be qualified as a “trend,” but model Karen Elson was certainly trending during NYFW.

Fashion Week is arguably all about the clothes, and a model’s job is to highlight a designer’s clothing- but when I saw Karen Elson’s mane of red hair float down the runway for the first time this week, I wasn’t looking at her outfit!  Karen has an ethereal beauty- a graceful, delicate form; milky white skin; flaming red hair- that can be taken from full-on glam (seen at DVF & Jason Wu) to haute hippie (Anna Sui) to fresh-faced prairie girl (Michael Kors).

Karen Elson not only walked the runway- she owned it.  Opening 3 shows and closing 2, Karen was the queen of the catwalk in my eyes.  But once I got over my girlish glee at seeing her back on the runway (she last walked in just one show for SS13, and a few others for SS12), I got to focus on the designer duds she was rocking, and those were pretty great too- though not always my style.  Girl knows how to get the job done!

The fashion industry is finally circling back to another era of the supermodel (Karlie Kloss, Cara Delvigne) after a few years of anonymous models and celebrity brand ambassadors.  It’s nice to see the modeling world pick back up where the greats like Karen Elson and Naomi Campbell (also on the runways this season!) left off- and it’s even better to see that the greats are still doing their thing.

I hope the runways aren’t the only place we see Ms. Elson this season- do you think she’ll pick up some campaigns for SS14?  I’m betting she will!
